Hidden Agendas in Obama’s Speech? True or False

Controversy isn’t just about health care anymore.

President Obama’s address to students stirred up plenty of disagreements on its own.

Bullitt East students didn’t get to watch the speech because most rooms don’t have TV’s hooked up. In the speech Obama addressed students in the nation about staying in school. Many parents didn’t want their kids watching Obama’s speech because they disagree with Obama and what he says.

With the TV’s in Bullitt East class rooms recently removed, watching the speech would have been impossible for teachers without projector screens. Even those who have the screens still couldn’t watch it on some computers. Also, a lot of teachers didn’t want to watch it because it would take up too much class time, especially if it was unrelated to the class.

A lot of schools in Bullitt County also followed the example of Bullitt East in not watching the speech. “Only a couple of Social Studies classes watched it at North,” said Tracey Lamb, principal of North Bullitt High School. “It was a school level decision,” said Keith Davis, superintendent of Bullitt County Public Schools. If teachers could, why didn’t they? The speech was just telling students to have a good year and to stay in school. Most said because it was unrelated or would take up too much valuable time.

Obama’s speech was intended to tell all students to stay in school and have a great year; but there were materials teachers could pass out with the speech, so they could make it part of class. Some extra materials included questions for teachers to discuss such as; “Do you think we can re-invent America’s educational system and do all President Obama promises for ‘the cost of just a few days in Iraq?’” and “Why is Obama acting ‘responsibly’ when he facilitates that kind of long-term burden?”

The speech also included statements for teachers to talk about with students such as: “Students, how many hours do you study a night and how many AP courses have you signed up for this semester? Whatever those numbers are; each one of you should study harder and sign up for at least 50% more AP courses before you graduate. If you don’t study or you aren’t signed up for any AP courses, then find a fellow student and tell him or her to study twice as hard and sign up for twice as many AP classes. Just remind them, ‘yes, we can’,” Is this really necessary? The speech was meant to motivate, not to add busy work. “…those add-on questions and things for teachers to talk about would have taken away from the motivation students may have gotten from watching the speech. It should have been the speech, and left at that. Nothing additional,” said Vickie Blevins, parent of a Bullitt East sophomore. It should be up to the parents to discuss the speech with their children if they deemed it necessary.

Many parents didn’t want their students watching the speech. Notes were sent to school by parents informing them not to show the speech to their child. A lot of parents were worried this speech just wasn’t going to be used just to tell students to have a good year. Some people thought Obama had a hidden agenda with his speech to students. Mainly conservatives were worried about this. It was meant to inspire and to have students try their hardest in school, though. Obama didn’t have a hidden agenda.

The speech was innocent, telling students to have a good year, not meant to brainwash kids and have them running home and discussing health care with their parents. All schools should have been required to watch the speech, unless parents didn’t want them to see it.
