Before you buy a screen for your home theater be sure to put your projector through a projection calculator and measure the distance that your projector will be away from the screen. Be sure to put in the correct aspect ratio for example 16:9. For example a 45” x 80” screen is 45” high by 80” wide. The diagonal measurement will be 92” which means the measurement from corner to corner of this screen. There are mainly two kinds of projectors, video projectors and transparency projectors. Under the video projectors, there are four kinds. These are the LCD projector, CRT projector, DLP projector and LCOS projector. As for the transparency projector, it has the movie projector, slide projector, and overhead projector.
An LCD projector is also known as a liquid crystal display. It uses a metal halide lamp in order to send light through the LCD panels so as to display images. It is the modern slide projector and overhead projector of today.
CRT projectors are popularly known as video projectors. It utilizes high-brightness picture tubes or CRT so as to create an image. The created image is then enlarged and focused with the use of a lens. This lens is placed behind the face of the CRT.
A DLP or digital light processing device uses a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD). It is a small memory chip which adjusts the electromagnetic mirrors for every pixel in the image. It is also good to use even in rooms that are lit.
LCOS stands for liquid crystal on silicon. It is known as a micro-projection technology device which is used for televisions. Like DLP, it makes use of reflective technology but has liquid crystals instead.
Under the transparency projector, the movie projector uses films on a reel to form moving pictures. A slide projector also enlarges photographic slides on the screen. The overhead projector also enlarges images of pictorial or written material on a transparency that is placed underneath the projector.

Materials which can be used for making Projector Screen: • Lightweight wood. May use: poplar, fir, or choose one you are familiar working with. Get 4 pieces wood that may be made into outer frame for the black border. • L-brackets and screws • Black Fabric for Border. May use: Black velveteen • White Fabric. May use : Photographers white seamless paper, white blackout curtain • Glue • Some cutting and attaching tools. Woodsaw, staple gun, scissors, drill, screwdriver.
Materials used in making outer frame of the projector screen: 1. Have the wood cut at the store. Cut two of the outer frame boards to 55.25″ and the other two to 93.5″ 2. Cut end of each side outer frame at 45 degrees. 3. Cut the black cloth into 4 wide strips, 2 strips for the shorter sides of the frame, and another 2 for the longer sides. Include extra space for tucking in to sides 4. Wrap the outer frame sides in the black cloth strips. Lay the wood at the center of a strip, pull tautly and staple. 5. Join each side together to form a rectangle frame. Use L-brackets at each corner to hold the frame together Viewing surface of Projector Screen 6. Attach the white fabric at the wrong side of the black frame of the projection screen. Pull tautly and staple about 8-9 inches apart. 7. Add hooks or hanging implements you want to use for the projector screen. Enjoy viewing from your own handmade projection screen which will cost much less than the projector screen bought from any outside store.
